Hamer and Enders Named Basketball MVP
Belfast Varsity Basketball Senior MacKenzie Hamer recently received the MVP award for Allegany County Division Two. Hamer is the first varsity girls basketball player to receive this award since 1982. The last time a player from Belfast received this award was in 1982, when Lisa Hayes received the award. Before that it was Mary Kay Hayes who won it in 1979. Lisa also is the only varsity girls basketball player to score 1,000 career points. Debate continues to this day about that due to the fact that record keepers are not sure of exactly how many points she finished with. Hamer was also selected to play in the exceptional senior game this past month. She finished fifth on the Allegany County Top 10 scorers for basketball, ending her senior season averaging 14.3 points per game.
Adam Enders also received MVP for Allegany County Division Two as a sophomore. His team advanced to the quarterfinals this year before losing a close one to Andover. Adam made history in his 24 point effort at Houghton on January 13, making his way onto the 1,000 point list. He followed that up with a 33 point performance in the Barkley Showcase at Alfred University in a 62-37 win. Adam also broke the school record for three pointers in a season with 61. He finished the year on top of the Top 10 scoring list in Allegany County, averaging 21.7 points per game. BCS is proud to win both MVPs this year. Practice makes perfect. Congratulations to both of these players for their hard work on the court!

Congratulations MacKenzie!!!
My brother Tim encouraged me to read this. The story brought back many fond memories of my friends and teammates at BCS, and made me think about the meaning of an MVP award. Over the years I have learned that in sports and in life, we are rarely successful without the guidance and support of others. Someone also has to stand up and help lead others to a common goal.
I’m sure you helped to motivate your teammates to try their best by showing your enthusiasm for the game and your willingness to work hard. Let’s face it, if you’re not passionate about what you do, you won’t have the drive to do it well and persevere through all of the setbacks. By slogging through challenges together, it can also be reassuring that you’re on the right path and your collective efforts will be worth the struggle.
Congratulations again, and best wishes to you and your classmatess at BCS!!
Mary Kay (Class of ’79)
