The Art Of Racing In The Rain is a well-written and well-developed novel. The story is told from the perspective of a dog named is Enzo-”Zo” for short. That dog, however, is getting old and he wants to grasp his humanness. He believes that when he dies, he’ll become a man. He tries to make sense of the good and make peace with the bad. Enzo helps Danny, his human companion, through his children’s custody battles. Enzo is the ideal dog for this man and Danny’s only best friend. The author creates imagery through the dog’s eyes and intelligence. Enzo’s words create not only an impact on the book’s story, but on the reader as well. “So much of language is unspoken. So much of language is comprised of looks and gestures and sounds that are not words. People are ignorant of the vast complexity of their own communication.”

I strongly recommend this book to dog lovers only because let’s face it, cat people wouldn’t understand the true meaning of a “man’s best friend.” This dog will touch your heart and will cause tears to fall from your eyes. If you’ve never read a book narrated by a dog before, then you’re in for a treat. Truly a good read, it’s no wonder it was a New York Times bestseller and remained on that list for 156 weeks. This book came out before A Dog’s Purpose and definitely lead the way with dog-narrated books.  If you’re interested in this book, stop by Ms. Preston’s room and pick up a copy.
